Inspired by a panel of writer-contributors to editor Sun Yung Shin’s widely acclaimed book, “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota*” at an MHQ client conference, the MHQ staff wanted to learn more. They decided to explore the book as a team.
As part of MHQ’s intentional commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity, the team scheduled regular monthly gatherings to discuss the book, one essay at a time. Facilitated by a different MHQ team member each month, the facilitator guided discussion using the Reading Guide, available on the book’s web site.
“It is imperative that we have a structured way to develop our team’s understanding of and ability to embrace difference,” said Dara Rudick, MHQ CEO. “This book allows us to openly discuss topics and learn from one another’s’ experiences in ways that might otherwise not happen.”
This was the feedback MHQ received from some MHQ team members:
“Making time for conversation, no matter how long or short the time is, heightens your awareness of cultural impacts and builds a new level of respect and connection with my teammates. It’s OK to ask questions!”
–Ashley Driste, MHQ Events Manager
“I have learned from our book discussions that I work with some fearless colleagues. They are willing to take on tough conversations. That creates an awareness that has impacted our team, families, clients and community, leaving us all better people. What a gift!”
“I have learned it is okay to have an open dialogue and ask the hard questions. I am naïve in thinking that for most [people] everything is OK. I have gained more perspective. I enjoy working for a place that finds it important to have these discussions in a welcoming environment.”
–Tammy Schoenberg, MHQ Office Manager
“While reading each story, I have been pushed to explore my own feelings, values and experiences in a much deeper way. I truly believe these discussions have helped me not only focus on the issues, acknowledge things about our society and about myself, but has also helped me grow and be both a more aware and better person in both my professional and personal lives.”
–Jim Murphy, MHQ Client Executive Director
