Congratulations to Annie Britt, Stephanie Gandy, and Jim Murphy for earning their certification in DEI in the Workplace! Following a seven-week journey to apply Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles to positively impact the workplace, they all earned their “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate” through the University of Southern Florida Muma College of Business.
“The DEI program was filled with such rich and engaging dialogue” said MHQ Controller Annie Britt. “It’s encouraging to know that people are now having these conversations openly about DEI and that it is being taken seriously. The time is now. One important truth that stuck with me is that intentions don’t matter, only outcomes.”
Participants learned how building and growing a workforce that includes differing races, religions, ages, genders and sexual orientations, and persons with disabilities can not only improve broad society issues but can also help companies develop novel business practices, increase revenue, and improve performance.
MHQ Executive Director Jim Murphy’s biggest takeaways from the USF DEI Certification course include “more in-depth focus and attention to stereotypes and biases, which we all have and must deal with; looking at yourself and your organization as a leader through a DEI lens in order to maximize impact and sustainability of these efforts; and overall, the real-life context of DEI through the guest speakers and the sharing of both success and challenges.
“As an Executive Director, it’s important to look at DEI from a personal, as well as organizational and governance perspective. All of these are related and yet different. This course has helped shape ways to engage and lead, as well as push, this important work forward, while helping us all grow and evolve in a new, broader, and healthier culture for our work,” said Jim.
“I found the certificate particularly engaging as there were topics covered from a business and economic perspective” said MHQ Executive Administrative Assistant Stephanie Gandy. “The growth rate of diversity in the workforce cannot be denied. Those embracing it and building on it are contributing not only to a changing world, but to their business growth and longevity. This was a great opportunity and a greater reminder of the benefits and reasons to celebrate our differences in the workplace and beyond.”
