What if the most powerful message your association can share is one it doesn’t write itself?
And I’m not talking about AI.
The Challenge
When associations have an important story to tell, whether it’s a milestone anniversary, a strategic achievement, or decades of member impact, the instinct is often to tell all of it. More history. More accomplishments. More context.
In association marketing, though, more information doesn’t always mean more engagement. Sometimes, less is more.
Because associations know their story so well, they can overwhelm audiences with details, making it harder for members to identify what matters most.
Today’s audiences want more than information. They want connection. They want to see themselves in the story.
The Case Study
I recently worked with a client preparing to celebrate a significant milestone. The initial version of the campaign website leaned heavily on written content. It highlighted the organization’s history, achievements, and contributions to the profession over many decades. While the information was valuable, the experience felt more like reading a report than participating in a celebration.
Together, leadership and I reimagined the experience.
Instead of leading with lengthy explanations, we focused on engagement. An introductory video created an immediate emotional connection. A user-friendly interactive timeline allowed visitors to explore key milestones at their own pace. Members were invited to share their personal stories and memories, putting authentic voices at the center of the experience. Quick action links made it easy for visitors to participate in anniversary activities, contribute content, and stay involved throughout the celebration.
The organization’s history did not disappear. In fact, it became more visible because people could experience it rather than simply read about it.
The difference was subtle but important.
The landing page stopped talking about the community and started demonstrating it.
The Solution
At MHQ, we’ve found that the most engaging association communications create opportunities for stakeholders to participate rather than simply delivering information.
The goal is to create space for members to see themselves in the narrative.
Review your next marketing campaign, webpage, or member communication and ask a simple question: Are we telling our audience about our impact, or are we showing it?
If the answer is “mostly telling,” look for one opportunity to add interaction, member-generated content, or storytelling. A member quote, a short video, a photo submission, or an interactive element may create more connection than an entire page of carefully written copy.
When members become part of the content experience, the content becomes far more powerful.
