Association Recognition:
Minnesota Library Association Members Recognized for
Excellence in Diversity Initiatives and GLBT Advocacy
Congratulations to two members of MHQ client Minnesota Library Association (MLA): DeWitt Wallace Library of Macalester College and the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection!
DeWitt Wallace Library of Macalester College was recognized with the 2016 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its assessment, collaboration, and diversity initiatives and efforts. Sponsored by ACRL and YBP Library Services, the award recognizes the staff of a college, university, and community college library for programs that deliver exemplary services and resources to further the educational mission of the institution.
The Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection was recognized with the American Library Association’s Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence for its tremendous impact in collecting and preserving the record of the GLBT community. The award was established to honor a library, librarian, library staff member, library board and/or library friends groups who serve the GLBT community. Nominees are judged based on innovation, impact, sustainability and advocacy.
“The Minnesota Library Association is very proud of the outstanding work that these two organizations are doing in the areas of diversity and advocacy,” said MLA President Margaret Stone. “Our association strives to support the efforts of its members to reach that level of excellence.”
For more than 25 years, DeWitt Wallace Library of Macalester College has offered resources and innovative services for inspired scholarship. The library owns more than 400,000 volumes and sees nearly 14,000 visitors per week. In addition to housing physical collections and providing a central access point to virtual collections, the library was designed as a community gathering space and hosts a variety of campus events.
The Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies houses over 3,000 linear feet of material about the GLBT experience. It includes published material, organizational records, personal manuscripts, informational files, films, music, textiles, posters, and other items. The collection is international in scope and has materials in approximately 58 languages.
