Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in the United States has been celebrated in many forms, and under many names. However, its roots are traditionally linked to the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. To quote President Joe Biden, “Pride is both a jubilant communal celebration of visibility and a personal celebration of self-worth and dignity. This Pride Month, we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.”
Pride celebrations have taken on many forms, from parades to parties and protests to proms. Since the start of the modern LGBTQ+ liberation movement in the 1970s, hundreds of independent Pride events have sprung up in cities worldwide, each distinctly local and generally tied in some way to the foundational Stonewall Riots in June.
We at MHQ invite you to explore how ways you can be more inclusive, whether it’s reading and using National Public Radio and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)’s Guide to Gender Identity Terms, learning about anti-LQBTQ+ legislation in your region and how you can support efforts to defeat these bills, attending a Pride event to show your support (click here for Pride 101: The First-Timer’s Guide), or any number of other things.
