No one knows when ice cream first made an appearance but according to the International Dairy Foods Association, ice cream’s origins reach as far back as the second century B.C.
At MHQ we gladly took up the call to share our favorite flavors and we challenge you support your local ice cream shop and celebrate summer!

Ice cream is a necessary find anywhere we travel.
We’ve had dishes in London, cones in Guatemala, treats in Paris, Ireland, Canada and Mexico.
Our favorites in the states have to be from Oakland and Chicago and our local favorite Sebastian Joe’s. Pistachio and chocolate is my favorite combo!

Growing up our family always did ‘Kelley Family Malt Night.’ We’d get malts from our favorite local ice cream shop. That’s a tradition that has continued to this day.
Even in college, my roommates and I would have ‘Kelley Family Malt Nights’ together and go to Annie’s on the University of Minnesota campus.

I am not much of an ice cream person, but I do love Sebastian Joe’s Oreo ice cream. When I was younger, my family always celebrated the end of the school year with an ice cream cone and having a scoop of Oreo ice cream really brings back the excitement of summer than you can only feel when you’re a little kid.
They also said that I would truly be an adult when I graduated from ordering Oreo to ordering raspberry chocolate chip. I’m happy to report that I while may stray into the cinnamon, pumpkin, or even maple walnut, I have yet to actually achieve full adulthood and order raspberry chocolate chip. It’s important to retain your childlike sense of wonder sometimes. Luckily, I have my nephew to help me with that. He does love his ice cream.

Over the past few years, the gift of delicious vegan ice cream has appeared in all of my favorite local ice cream shops! I just enjoyed a raspberry chocolate chip scoop from Minnehaha Scoop ice cream in South Minneapolis.
I also love Ben and Jerry’s non-dairy P.B. & Cookies. I am so grateful for the many ways to enjoy ice cream without animal products!

Of course, my favorite spot in Minneapolis is Milkjam Creamery. I appreciate their creative flavors especially their gluten free and vegan options.
At home, I do make fresh ice cream. It is super easy and fun. This one is a family favorite: loaded with cinnamon and coconut milk.
