It’s no surprise that the staff of MHQ are big fans of our furry companions. Get to meet some of our favorite canines as we celebrate National Dog Month this August!
Rachel & Walter
Walter (aka Wally) is a very sweet and very handsome 3 year old mutt – likely made up of Retriever, Lab, and Chow Chow (check out that black tongue)! I found Wally in a shelter in Oshkosh, Wisconsin when he was just 1 year old, and it was love at first sight! Wally quickly made himself comfortable in my home, claiming every piece of furniture as his own and leaving trails of his fur everywhere. His favorite things include saying hi to every person and dog he sees, going for long hikes, and holding hands as though he’s a human.

Mike & Duke
(Mister) Duke was a little guy. We adopted him in 2020 already in the later stages of his life, hoping to give him a comfortable home to live out whatever time he had left. We quickly found that he wasn’t really a “dog”. He wouldn’t play or get excited about much. In fact, his hip dysplasia made even his “sit” look ridiculous – so he was our little guy that just stared at us, snoozed in an armchair, and occasionally cuddled. Still, he was a dream, and unfortunately he left us back in March. Lucky for him, he passed in his favorite armchair with a bellyful of filet mignon. Adopt a senior dog – their time may be short, but they need homes too.

Elise & Mabel
Mabel was a surprise to the family. My mother brought her home without telling anyone just days before Christmas. Her breed, “coton de tulears”, are well known for being very smart and agile — so much so that they are called “clown dogs” and are often used in circuses, movies, television, and more. Mabel embodies just that: ferociously smart (sometimes too much for her own good), extremely agile, and a sweet, loving companion. She’s now going on 12 years of age and has yet to lose any of her spunk or puppy energy! Her favorite activities are running after balls in the yard, tearing up squeaky toys (lamb chops are her favorite), and snuggling very close to sleeping humans. – Elise Gumm, Marketing Communications Coordinator
Kael & Lily & Nova
Lily Bug and Nova Monster are 2 dogs that embody what family is really like. Nova was already in her teens when Lily and I met her — thank goodness she liked Lily, a rambunctious pupper, and myself because otherwise my wife and I would not be married! Nova had a strong indifference to any other dogs, but Lily pulled her out of her indifference and back into her playful puppy ways. If Nova wanted attention there was no way she wasn’t going to get it. With a shove of her snoot, her head would be under your hand no matter what you were doing — if you dared to take your hand away you would be met with a huff that would rival that of a perturbed teenager. Nova had a very long life and passed in April at almost 16 years old with her favorite sister Lily by her side and chocolate on her breath as a fond farewell.
Lily on the other hand is a rambunctious 7 year old that doesn’t know the meaning of slowing down. Running, bouncing, snuggling, and laying like a goofus is the name of the game for her. She now plays with her little brother Hank (a cat). She had a nasal tumor but has since been told she is cancer free. All that remains is a small bald line, much like a racing stripe, on her snoot. Dogs can save lives and truly give unconditional love that can’t be rivaled. Adopting is the best thing you can do. – Kael Henlock, Membership Coordinator
Dara & Jo & Tucker
Jo and Tucker are two loving Staffie-mixes, both adopted in their “teen” years. Full of energy and together nearly 200 pounds of dog, these pups keep the Rudick-Allen household, including Panther the cat, active and full of laughter.
Every morning Tucker and Jo get a walk around Powderhorn Park, no matter the weather. They are both ready to go whether it is 100 degrees or minus 0, inspiring, and requiring, Dara and Ryan, to be up for that walk too! They like the usual dog things: treats, belly rubs, and squirrels.
