At MHQ, we know our furry companions play a big role in our lives. This National Dog Month, we’re celebrating the dogs who bring joy, comfort, and energy to our team.

Wumbus is a goofy, six-year-old rescue dog. I came across his photo and fell in love with his ill-proportioned body, and we reached out immediately about adopting this guy. Our best guess is that he’s a corgi / chihuahua mix. When we adopted Wumbus, I was teaching, and my students held a naming contest. Wumbus was the winner, coming from the video game Stardew Valley’s random name generator. Other contenders were “Normal,” “Speed,” and “Wallace.” We’re confident Wumbus suits him the best! Wumbus spends his days snuggling up as close as possible to his favorite humans, running after chipmunks in the yard, and scavenging for any crumbs he can find.

Walter (aka Wally) is still a very sweet and very handsome, now 4 year old, retriever mix. While he’s slowed down a little over the last year, Wally still enjoys chasing other dogs at the park, charming new people into belly rubs and treats, and obeying his human only on the fourth or fifth command. Obedient or not, Wally is the best pal a person could ask for!

Meet Louie, our sweet 15-year-old Havanese with the most expressive eyes you’ve ever seen. Even as a senior pup, he still loves to play, go on long walks, and of course enjoy plenty of naps. Louie’s favorite things in life include his treats, little bites of chicken, and endless belly rubs. He’s a total people-lover, though he stays a little suspicious of other dogs. When he’s not soaking up attention (or whining for more of it!), you’ll find him curled up for a cozy snooze. Louie is our best pal, our happy fella, and the heart of our home—we love him so much.

Always up for adventure and full of energy, Jo and Tucker enjoyed their visit to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, this past spring.

We adopted Belladonna Marie Legossi on Nov. 1 of 2024, and she has enriched our lives so much. At the time, we had a second dog, Lily, and they were besties. Sadly, Lily, our second dog, died of cancer earlier this year. Belladonna is such a vibrant, outgoing, and hilarious dog. She is only a year-and-a-half-old and is great with kids, loves running, chasing squirrels and other small animals as well as snuggling up for video games, movies, and nap time with her brother Hank (a cat), my wife, and me. Dogs add a special type of love into people’s lives, and honestly, I don’t think I can live without a dog in the house anymore.
