ABOUT NEWHAB

The Network for Energy, Water and Health in Affordable Buildings (NEWHAB) is a national social impact network leveraging the relationships between individuals, sectors, and policies. More than 100 individuals and 200 allied members of NEWHAB work in diverse sectors across the U.S. that include energy, affordable housing, water, health, and social justice focused on addressing complex challenges. Together, NEWHAB works to drive increased affordability, health and comfort through efficient energy and water consumption in affordable multifamily buildings.

The network engages diverse stakeholders to leverage and connect their collective expertise, developing and testing strategies to make sure low-income and disadvantaged communities are seeing the benefits of energy efficiency, clean air, and clean water.

NEWHAB is member driven and works closely with Energy Efficiency for All (EEFA). EEFA is a 13-state campaign focused on increasing energy efficiency in affordable multi-family housing. NEWHAB complements and provides a national platform to share learnings and develop solutions to complex problems. NEWHAB membership is open to individuals outside of EEFA’s 13-state focus. BACKGROUND

When NEWHAB launched in 2014, the initiative needed infrastructure and administrative support. Management HQ (MHQ) provided robust operational support to the growing network.  With MHQ’s help, NEWHAB engagement has grown from a concept to more than 100 individuals and 200 allies who now work toward a shared purpose.

CHALLENGE

As a new initiative, NEWHAB needed to attract and engage key stakeholders. Additionally, when NEWHAB grew to the stage of seeking a permanent managing director, MHQ provided operational stability and continuity during what could have potentially been a difficult transition period.

SOLUTION

In the founding stages, MHQ immediately partnered with NEWHAB’s staff to develop structure and a growth plan for NEWHAB. Helping to create a solid communications infrastructure, strategy, and key processes, MHQ supported NEWHAB in making this initiative successful. Later, the NEWHAB team worked closely with MHQ to hire a permanent managing director.

RESULTS

MHQ provided organizational coordination between NEWHAB’s partners and allies to ensure the work went uninterrupted during the new managing director transition. It was during this transition that NEWHAB launched its first membership drive, requiring MHQ’s support to develop membership criteria, engagement opportunities and an onboarding process for new members.

With MHQ’s involvement, the association nearly tripled the number of engagement opportunities available to members at its annual conference in a single year.

MHQ’s experience, agility and commitment to strategy helped NEWHAB navigate what could have been a very difficult transitional period and not only survive, but thrive.
