For the third consecutive summer, MHQ Executive Director Mackenzie Kelley volunteered as a counselor with Experience Camps, a nonprofit organization that provides free week-long summer camps for children grieving the loss of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver.
Many of the volunteers have experienced a similar loss themselves, helping create a supportive environment where campers feel understood and connected.
This summer, Mackenzie returned to guide the same group of campers, who are now preparing to begin their junior year of high school. Their week was filled with activities including swimming, tubing, pottery, friendship bracelet making, a talent show, a silent disco, s’mores around the bonfire, and plenty of late-night laughs. Each day also included clinically informed activities designed to help campers share about their person(s) who has died and process their grief together.
Reflecting on her experience, Mackenzie shared, “I’m grateful for this community of volunteers, and especially proud of my campers, who I’ve had the pleasure of watching grow into such confident, kind, funny, and resilient young adults. Experience Camps is a special place.”
Mackenzie’s commitment to Experience Camps reflects a value shared across the MHQ team. Every board and organization we support benefits from the expertise and perspective our team members gain through volunteer service.
In fact, 100% of MHQ employees serve in volunteer roles, with many holding leadership positions on boards of directors.
This firsthand volunteer experience gives us a unique understanding of the board member journey, allowing us to be stronger partners and help enhance the overall volunteer experience.
